Two women sitting on a train and one turns to the other and says, ‘This is the longest journey of my life.’

‘It is taking a while,’ says Colette.

Rose folds her arms across her chest. ‘I wish we could open the window.’ She scans the carriage to see if anyone responds. ‘It’s amazing how they can’t regulate the air conditioning on these trains and we have to sit here far too hot.’

Oblongs of sunlight fall onto Colette’s hands. She holds them out in front of her, noticing her own wedding rings on her left finger and her mother’s on her right.

Rose says, ‘Or far too cold. That’s the other thing. Too hot or too cold on these trains.’

‘What are you talking about?’ says Colette.

‘The windows. Where do you drift off to all the time?’

Colette smiles at that. Once, on television, she heard a celebrity say they had a rich inner world which they escaped into whenever they could. That’s what Colette thinks she has, too. Nothing matters but what’s happening right now and her daydreams. Rose will always be here. Colette says, ‘Rose, I’m putting my foot down. We are walking from Blackfriars.’

Rose looks at her and scowls. Then she says, ‘Okay, okay. We’ll walk.’
